1951 starter Peter Barton:-
Peter Barton (1951 starter) writes:-
Eric Marshall's reminiscences and cast lists for productions in the late
'40's prompts me to add my own from the '50's. I was involved in several
school productions beginning as a first former when the Junior Dramatic
Society staged "Scuttleboom's Treasure" which involved a group of schoolboys
and their teacher foiling a dastardly bunch of pirates and ending up with
the treasure. The following year I believe we staged "The Knight of the
Burning Pestle". Later I also took part in Henry V and a modern (well, it
was then) play by R.C. Sherrif, "The White Carnation." Another memory was
taking part in the Classical Society's production of "Aulularia" in Latin!
For me this involved a considerable feat of memory as for the most part I
did not understand my lines (I dropped Latin after 'O' Level but got talked
into doing this for the good of my soul by Max Lyne, VI Arts form master.
Henry V and The White Carnation were produced by Stan Gibbs. At the end of
Henry V, Donald Murdoch of treasured memory told me I was not very good in
the part, but at least I was better than Olivier. I am still wondering
about that!
