| 20.05.01 | ERIC MARSHALL:- I have been in touch with Phillip Tattersall and we have exchanged our post BGS life-histories. I have also read Gordon Shaw's message on the web site - interesting memories come back. Have sent a message to him. In his message Gordon mentions Mr Langfield, the one-armed porter. He was quite a character. I seem to recall that during my time at BGS he retired, came back a year later and then retired again; we all contributed twice to a leaving gift!! I also remember noting the different caning methods used by Dr Benson, headmaster in my day, and Mr Hawthornthwaite, the deputy head. On quite a few ocassions as a senior prefect I was delegated to take delinquent students to one or other for punishment. Dr Benson, wearing his gown with flowing sleeves, would with great flourish weald his cane but the sleeve would take much of the momentum out of the strike. Mr Hawthornthwaite, being a physicist, used the natural flexibility of the cane and simply bent it sharply and allowed the free end to strike the hand of the delinquent - minimum effort on his part for maximum effect! I also recall that somewhere near the school front door there was a fire extinguisher. I don't know quite how it happened but it was knocked over and proceeded to produce vast quantities of foam. Some quick thinking person thought to minimise the mess in the entrance hall and directed the flow down the steps towards the front door. There the sea of foam gradually rose up the steps until it seemed that the whole of the lower part of the entrance area was filled with foam! I have no recollection of how the mess was cleaned up!
