Meliorian April 2007

Miss Mary Roberts 1920 -2006

The Meliora Website is very sad to report the passing of Mary Roberts the third and last Head Mistress of Collegiate Girls School.

The website was represented at Marys funeral and an obituary can be read at Miss Mary Roberts 1920 – 2006.

REUNIONS

The 1950 – 51 -52 Reunion was held in June and the half a century after leaving main school 51 old boys were reunited thanks to Peter Barton and Duke Hall. Peter has written an interesting report which highlights the time constraints which Reunions have......

One of the downsides of a large Reunion is that the time flashes by. You realise with a shock that 5 hours have gone by, and you have so much you wanted to say to so many people that you did not have time to do. But I knew this would be the case. The arithmetic is pretty clear; 50 ‘Old Boys’ and 300 minutes = 6 minutes each on average.

The website is most grateful to the organsisers of this Reunion for the very kind and welcome donation to the 2007 hosting fees.

The Starters of 1968 and 1978 are both to hold Reunions in 2007. Further details on the relevant pages for each year. The website has gained some useful experience of reunions over the years and is willing to freely assist in whatever way it can to help in the organising and publicising of these very special events. The 1968 starters are also having a night out on Friday 15th June and starters from this year should e-mail the website for details.

MELIORA MONITORS BIRTHDAY

Martin Wilson the website monitor has never been one to hide away himself on the annual anniversary of his birth. He hopes members of the Meliora Website will wish him well for his 50th Birthday on Friday May 11th.

WHEN THE FOEMAN BARES HIS STEEL

Peter Barton has sent the following link and message:-

Make sure you are alone at home, lock the doors and shut the windows, roll back the years and go for it.

When the foeman bares his steel

He adds I hope the link works.
Martin: has this particular tradition survived? It will certainly mean a lot to many generations of BGS Old Boys.
Happy Easter and all the best to you all.

Peter Barton

Ken Davitt adds............:-

I had a very good friend at Grammar School called Arthur Kelleher. We were brought up together in Coop St. WE both attended Revoe Primary School before passing the 11 plus to go to Grammar School. Before I left Grammar School Arthur moved to Manchester at about age 13 and subsequently to Australia. I lost all touch with him for over 30 years. However one day I was reading in the local Red rose advertiser about a Blackpool Cricket club under 17 team visiting Australia. In the middle of the piece it mentioned that 3 people were stood in the middle of Sydney cricket ground singing the Taran-tara chorus from Pirates of Penzance. These were all old boys of Blackpool Grammar School namely, Julian Allitt, the Blackpool Cricket Club Chairman at the time Alvar 'Ticker' Haslam and my pal Arthur. I contacted Jack Simmons, the Lancashire cricketer who was with the party and he undertook to send a letter on to a contact in Australia who knew Arthur. I received a reply a few days later and we met up in England later that year. This was in 1989 and have continued to keep in touch ever since. Although in my later years I became a lover of G & S I never realised when we used to sing that song with Bill Breeze on presentation day how grateful I would be in years to come.

Ken Davitt

The following feedback has been sent in:-

Dear Prefect,

Thanks for keeping me in touch; I enjoyed the stuff about Tarantara, Bill Breeze materialised before my very ears!

On a slightly pedantic note, the Foeman, I think, in the original, “bares” his steel, though admittedly he still also bears it.

Charles White ’54 Intake

From Paul Atkin (1958 Starter)

I well remember the “school song”, with 1st and 2nd years singing “ Go you heroes” in a mixed falsetto rendition and the rest of the school singing the baser “When the Foeman bares his steel”.

This base lead was led by Mr. Ken Topping who I think at times felt a trifle embarrassed, especially when some poor soul had the audacity to smile, chuckle or laugh.

Mr. Topping would invite the miscreant to speak to him after assembly and gently explain to him the difficulties in standing alone singing in front of the whole school.

Generally the person was appreciative of this advice and was not likely to be amused at the next song practice!

Paul Atkin

MELIORA MEMBERS (FINAL) MUSICAL CHOICE

The website gets some interesting and unusual requests over the year. These come from both members of the website and from those who recognise the rich and varied membership of a website such as this.

Two rather linked requests came in the summer :-

The first is for what tune/musical items you would wish to be played at your funeral! The researcher pointed out that there were more non religious services these days and that the recently departed were leaving lists of thier top tunes.
The Meliora website would welcome your choice of tunes for your 'final' event - all musical tastes are invited and if you wish to add a few words of explanation these will be published on the website. If you wish to remain annonymous in your musical submissions this will as always be respected. Please e-mail up to three choices to the rota Website Prefect

1980's

The website has been asked to help establish a website relating to bands events etc of the 1980's. Please visit :-
