Latest Website additions and changes

The website is regularly updated - and a list of the changes can be found in this months listing on the LATEST CHANGES page of the website.

Ongoing Reunion Partnership

The Meliora website is hoping to cement a relationship with VIDA the sports organization which is in partnership with the present school (Blackpool Collegiate Sports College). The VIDA sports centre offers FREE room hire in our stylish, modern and spacious function rooms. Even better VIDA can help organising everything from the catering to sourcing the entertainment, making sure it’s a party to remember!

With a licensed bar and the potential for a midnight extension this is a real opportunity to have a back to school Reunion (for anyone who attended the Highfurlong site anyway!)

The website hope to assist in an ongoing rolling reunion programme so that ‘Official Reunions’ may be held every 10 years.

The starters of 1976, and of course Reunion Organiser Rachel Barker, have very kindly agreed to be the first and will be holding a Reunion to celebrate reaching 40 years of age. Their reunion is to be held at VIDA in October and full details are contained within the 1976 pages on the website.

If the event is a success the website will be willing to assist in Reunions which mark major age milestones (40 50 60 etc.)

As always for further details please e-mail at the address at the foot of this page

Paul Stuttard

Paul Stuttard a 1960 starter has recently stumbled across the website and has started a search for some of his long lost pals. The website monitors assisted Paul by delivering copies of letters he sent to the local newspapers and getting them placed on local websites. Paul who left Blackpool for Canada nearly 40 years ago has not made contact with any of his peers in this time. Paul also sent in some school day swimming team photos which now appear in the 1960 index.

Paul is most grateful to the website and wrote in to say:-

Hi Monitor

Just checked out the site.
The pics look great.

I also got another response from the article.
I can't thank you enough but one of these days I'll get over there and share a couple of wobbly pops with you.
In the meantime I'll just have to drink to your health whenever Happy Hour rolls around.

Thanks again............Paul (Stuttard)

Cavalcade of Sport Question

A member of the website has sent in the following question:-

I am researching information for a book on Blackpool and wonder if you can help me. I attended this school from 1965 to 1968 and remember being involved in what I think was called the "Cavalcade of Sport" and it took place at the Tower Circus - again I think on a yearly basis. As I was never that interested in Sport, I do not know how I became involved...let alone what it was all about! All I remember is that we changed in the animal quarters, and jumped over the PE horse to the strains of "Penny Lane" by the Beatles.

Can anyone give me any further details? Please e-mail the Rota Monitor link at the foot of this page if you can!

Congratulations......

To David Brigden an old boy who has been appointed Professor of Education at University College Chester. Well done David.

Duke Hall a 1951 starter has written to say that a reunion [at the behest of Peter Barton-Canada] for 1951 starters will be held on the 24th June 2006.Malc Walker-OZ is hoping to attend, hence the long lead time [No he's not coming by bike] We have 40 names to date and previous message on page no 34 in archives index also refers. We are also interested in 1950 & 52 guys who may wish to join, Hope to hear from you all. Please e-mail the Rota Monitor to be put in touch

Peter Barton writes to add I hope the Monitors can come up with a way of contacting Stuart Horner who will also lead me to his cousin, Alan Johnston.

The monitors are not sure if this boys reunion should be seen as a challenge to the girls to hold a similar event?

Blackpool Collegiate Old Students Association - New School c.1962 VHS and CD

Were you in the 'new' school at Highfurlong in circa 1962? You may have appeared in a film made of the official opening of the building. There is good footage of the A.T.C. marching and a tour of the classrooms. This has been copied onto VHS tape cassette and CD. For further details please contact Gordon Halliwell on 01253-764901.

Blackpool Grammar School 1955 starter recalls........

Speaking to someone the other day reminded me of something some of our “55” plus friends may recall from Raikes Parade. At one of the houses on Church St backing on to the yard there was a scruffy house and the football used to go over the wall on numerous occasions. The occupant of the property used to rush out and snatch the ball . He used to always appear in a full length greasy dressing gown even if it was afternoon. We used to call him Fagin for obvious reasons .

We used to use Raikes Parade Methodist church for some lessons due to lack of space at the school. One afternoon ” DRIP “MURDOCH was taking us for Latin suddenly smoke was billowing from his pocket from his pipe that he hadn’t extinguished properly.

Amazing what you can recall from the distant past
Kind Regards - Steve Cross

Website Founders Birthday!

As you are all aware (or should be) by now the websites founder [Martin Wilson] a 1968 starter will celebrate his birthday on May 11th. Wherever you are in the world please raise a glass to him on this day as he is responsible for all those long lost chums you have made through the Meliora Website. There have been reunions both big and small and even news of the first Meliora wedding.

As it is Martins birthday we will gloss over the odd divorce he has (inadvertently) caused!!! Oh dear!
