FOREWORD

After six years as Headmistress of the Collegiate School I find it hard to believe that such a lively institution has reached the end of its independent life. This last edition of the Magazine is of special significance since it appears at the end of our final term.

During the last six years we have sought to maintain the school’s traditions and expand and increase the variety of its activities and I think this is reflected in the history so ably written by Dr. Wilkinson who herself holds a unique place in the school’s life. She was the last Head Girl when Miss Dunn was Headmistress and the first Head Girl when Miss Allen succeeded Miss Dunn. Later, in 1947, she returned as a Junior member of Staff for three and a half years, and then in 1960 she rejoined the Staff and since 1961 has been Deputy Headmistress. To her the school has meant a great deal and it is with affection that she has compiled its history. The school owes a great deal to her and she probably knows its three Headmistresses better than anyone else. The school may only have been an independent institution for 46 years but after studying its history and achievements I am sure we who are members of it, whether as present or past pupils or staff, can be proud to have been associated with it. The vital factor is not the length, but the quality, of our life and the quality of the school shines through the pages of its history, showing clearly that its members have indeed aspired to achieve the highest for the highest’s sake.

The increasing pace of life in the world in the post war era has been reflected in the activity of the school and I am glad that its efforts for Charity and Community Service have continued to flourish in a world which has become increasingly materialistic and selfish. We need not fear the world’s verdict when we read of the achievements of our Old Girls and are surrounded by evidences of their loyalty and affection for the Collegiate School.

To each one we say "Read the history of the school and be glad that you had a small part in shaping it. Do not think that the school’s tradition and spirit will die because the building is closed. We who are moving on to the Collegiate Grammar School are taking with us that tradition and the determined spirit which will ensure that all the best ideals of the school will be carried into the future as we build our new school jointly with the masters and boys of the Grammar School."
