| message contents: | Boo! What about this then, the old school brought together by the miracle of modern technology? God knows if any of you remember me - I can remember lots of you! I've lived in Manchester for 20 years now, having moved here as a mature student; I got a VERY good honours degree in Comparative Religion (unwrapped mummies and practised Buddhist mantras, etc.) and have postgrad qualifications so am dead smug after hiding my true talent while at school. . . At the moment I tutor nurses who want to "return to learning" in Study Skills - just for a few hours a week as health problems have knocked full-time work on the head. I also co-write comedy sketches with a friend and fuss over my cats. You could say I've become the archetypal academic spinster like some of our former teachers, but this one has lots of facial piercings, plays the drums and dresses like a teenager! Hope to hear from somebody - I'm in regular contact with Carole Charnock (now Shaw)who still lives in Blackpool and has been happily married to her lovely husband, Tony, for nigh on 30 years now. P.S. If any Domestic Science teachers are reading this, I still haven't finished the mini-dress I started in 1966 - so there. Lotsa love, Frances xxx. |

| message contents: | Stumbled across this site yesterday, a strange experience seeing all those teachers again after so long. I was, however, struck by the comaraderie of those who were educated at the "new" school that replaced Raikes Parade. I never attended the "new" school. Hopefully this comaraderie came from a more nurturing environment there, and perhaps a more informed education system. To me the true successes from Raikes Parade were the boys who survived the overt repression. I remember many of the male "teachers" as an odd collection of draft dodgers, bullies, sneerers, cranks, and occasional snot. The women teachers were a pleasant relief, and in my mind were far superior. At that time they also had a toadie prefect system, which some boys delighted in abusing. Don't get me wrong, I am a happy survivor and attribute my successes to my life after that school. I submit this as a non Polly Anna comment in support of one simple message I read which said "I hated my school". I agree. I look back at it as an unfortunate educational system which would not get its head above water here in Canada. I am just thankful that non of my own children had to endure it. Brian West |
