POWER CUTS

11.30 p.m. The streets are alive in the centre of the city. The church clock strikes the half-hour and al is black, just like a broom cupboard. Newspapers stop printing, factory lights go out, men go home. The electric trains stop, passengers go out on the platforms and lose their luggage. The streets are in chaos.

No traffic signs. no traffic lights, no street lights, no "Eat at Joes" or "Blue Moon Restaurant". no yellow on the zebra crossings, no street trams nothing. Just empty Blackness. There is silence. Then candles are lit in ni hts clubs, more and more headlights pick out unseen people. Only the airport has power.

No coal in the coal yards, no coal at the power stations. Halfeaten pies glasses of champagne. No tills are ringing, no soft lights or music no microphones in the music halls. Night industry comes to a halt at the steel works, no light, no steel

It's Area D.
