1971 Pupils from Sandra Caddoo Collection #10

I obviously have lots of memories, but one rather amusing one concerned me and Carol-Ann Goacher. We were probably only in the 1st or 2nd Year and had caught the bus home from Highfurlong. It only stopped in town, so we had to wait outside the Opera House for a connecting bus to Squires Gate. For some reason, we had bought a packet of fake cigarettes from one of those novelty shops and thought we'd take the opportunity to look hard whilst waiting for our bus. There we were, puffing away on talcum powder fags with a painted-on red end when Miss Walmesley (then Deputy Head, I think), crept up behind us and said "hello girls, on your way home?". She didn't make one remark about our illicit 'smoke', although I think we leapt out of our skins and dropped just about every book, bag and PE kit we had on us. We thought we looked so incredibly sophisticated - just as we did when we tried to cod on to a bus conductor that we were German - "funf please"......but that's another story!
