Collegiate Girls School 1958 Starters -Memories

Memories kindly supplied by Jenny Mathison . Jenny writes:-
Here are just a few of my outstanding memories of Collegiate life in the sixties.

Dancing Classes with the Boy's Grammar.

These took place at the Raikes Parade site each Thursday after school and were the high spot of the week for the fifth form. There wasn't a great deal one could do to make our uniforms look glamorous, but we certainly tried. Unfortunately last lesson of the day was games and rather than incur the wrath of Miss Parton by hiding in the cloakrooms, it was quite common for us to turn out to hockey with our hair in pin curls and even the occasional plastic roller! To a generation of girls starved of male company from 9 till 4 every day, Dancing class was worth the effort. I don't think any of us actually learned to dance, but it was a real boost to our social lives.

Joint swimming gala at Derby Baths

Unfortunately only an annual event, but again quite an exciting one for the same reasons as the above.

Other joint events on the social calendar for the Sixth Form included:

Play-reading society, Classical society trips and Christmas dances.

Church Mornings

These occurred monthly, usually on a Wednesday if I remember correctly and affected all the schools in Blackpool. Instead of coming straight to school we were supposed to attend church service at our local church. As it was impossible to check up on so many pupils, the less religiously inclined saw these mornings as a good excuse for a lie in!

Detentions

As if staying in after school doing extra work wasn't enough, girls who had been in detention had to stand up throughout assembly every day for a week. There were also "Hat" and "Glove" detentions for those who were seen by staff or prefects minus an item of uniform. Girls who had received one of these had to stand up wearing the offending garment!

Other memories include:

Speech Days at the Winter Gardens
Uniform checks, (woe betide any girl who didn't have both indoor and outdoor shoes, or who wasn't wearing regulation navy blue knickers!)
The Golden Book
Mrs Robinson and her "Speech Training" classes.
The school dentist in Bennet Avenue. (not one of my fondest memories).
