Junior Debating Society
Chairman Mr. COWLEY
Secretary P. N. BARTON
The Society has had another enjoyable and entertaining year. The brunt of its work has been borne by a dozen or so very keen boys. and since the majority of these are Third Form boys, some concern has arisen over the shortage of members. We hope that more boys, especially from the First and Second Forms, will attend the meetings next year, and we assure them that the. debates are interesting, educative and enjoyable
. 'The outstanding meeting of the year was one combined one of junior and senior societies. Barton and Mears, of III Alpha, represented the Junior Society. The experiment proved worthwhile, and we hope that it will become an annual event.
A novel type of debate was held on two occasions. This was the balloon debate, in which six speakers defended one of six specified vocations, professions or trades. A. Walton (Angus to us) suffered a very heavy handicap on these occasions despite his powers of oratory. Eight ordinary motions were held and thoroughly enjoyed by all present
I should like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for their efforts to raise the standard of debating; the Porter for helping and encouraging us by attending our meetings; and our faithful and loyal Chairman Mr. Cowley, whose help was so often sought and so often given.
