1959 Holiday Group Photo

This was taken at the summit of Sca Fell Pike. My dad used
to take the church youth club to stay at High House, a hostel in Seathwaite, Borrowdale
(the wettest place in England) every year in the same week in August. The place belonged to the
K Shoe factory in Kendal, the town where he had been a curate before the war. He had always
kept up the connection with his Kendal friends. In 1959, he could not use the slot, so I
organised the group you see (plus the photographer, whose identity escapes me) to stay in High
House and climb the Lakeland Fells for a week, thus preserving my dad’s future options on the
week in question. We had a great week, did most of the great climbs in that neck of the
mountains, became drenched when Seathwaite lived up to its reputation and whiled away evenings
drinking Newcastle Brown at the pub, four or five miles away on foot.
