When I began, Mr. Harrison was our Form teacher and Room 3 was our Form room. Other teachers that year included Miss Fox [History], Miss Perkins [French], Mr. Whitaker [Music], Mr. Walmsley [Science] and Mr. Atkinson [P.E.].
I progressed up the school from 1 A to 2 A then 3 Alpha, 4 Alpha and 5 Alpha. I was in Stanley House, the others being Bright, Peel, Lancaster with Chadwick a later addition.
I spent 2 years in 6 Arts under Mr Lyne, my Latin teacher. My other main tutors were Mr. Murdoch [History] and Mr. Crampton [French]. I have always considered myself very fortunate to have been under the care of so many excellent and dedicated teachers, many of whom retired not long after I left in 1953. There were just 6 of us in 6 Arts 1 in 1951, the rest being David Hurst [12 Grade A's in the new G.C.E. 'O' Levels in 1951 !], the Brigden twins, Barry and Brian, Peter Clinning and Stuart Titchener. I believe Titch went into local government, but the other 5 all entered the teaching profession.
I qualified at Durham University and eventually retired in 1995 after 37 years as a history teacher in County Durham and Lancashire.I have been married to Betty, who I met during my time in the North East, for 42 years. We now live just north of Lancaster. I have been fortunate to secure a seasonal post at Lancaster Castle as a tourist guide where my history background comes in very useful and which also keeps me both mentally and physically fit --- and of course the tourists never hand in written work for me to mark !
Thinking about this article, the memories have come flooding back ---- in no particular order I recall a seious accident in school to a boy a year or two older whose picture I saw on a 1999 Reunion photograph-- Derek Beech, Michael Wimpenny having to see Dr. Benson after he had fastened a notice to the Head's door which read "GONE TO LUNCH -- BACK SOON", games of " push-cap" and "push-book" on the Library table while a 6th Former, having to see the Head myself after I accidentally broke a window in the Assembly Hall, having a great time on a week's school trip to Stratford-on-Avon in 1952, with boys from the 4th, 5th and 6th Forms and going to Fleetwood Cricket Club to cheer on our Form teacher, Mr.Rawlinson, who was a Fleetwood player.
I hope readers of these reminiscences have enjoyed hearing about the old days. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. My e-mail address is Peter Norris
